Sad But True MI Outlaws Home Gardens

Post by Glad E Olah on Mon Feb 23, 2015 3:26 pm

It was mentioned in another thread about Michigan outlawing home gardens a few years ago.

This was news to me, someone who apparently does not keep up with other states as I should.

I find it very appalling and want to learn more about it. Also is it still unlawful to have back yard gardens in the state of Michigan? Joyous and LFF fill us in please.

Here is one link I found that was posted in 2011.

Now doing more research with the following and please note this is about a Front Yard Garden not a Back Yard Garden. Video is about 15 minuets long.

I can see where this lady could win because the wording of the ordinance is not specific enough....

It's on the North side of Detroit, maybe about 100 miles East of here.

I guess Ms Bass came to an agreement With Oak Park. " Perhaps owing to the Bass familys indicating they were moving to Seattle, or to the negative media attention, the city dismissed the case. The Basses now have chickens at their new home, but no front-yard garden, since their lawn is concrete."

Thanks LFF!

I noticed the article had several mentions of other gardeners around the country including Ferguson MO.

I just stumbled across this piece...it is crazy! It's probably the same type of people who feel clothes lines depreciate property! They probably think back yard gardens look bad from the road!!!

I agree chrliesgal!

And some people may not be able to purchase a clothes dryer or the one they have may not work. That has happened to me before.

I remember hanging diapers out on the line and they would freeze before I got them all hung too. Today mothers do not know what cloth diapers are let alone hang them on a clothes line. I never will forget soaking the diapers in bleach water in a pail then washing them separately in Dreft Laundry soap. And you would fold them to fit baby as baby began to grow the wider the fold.

I have seen front yard gardens that look great to me.
Why must yards appear as a photo op? I would allow
nature to dictate my yard if allowed. A yard planted
with Clover would be kept short by rabbits and
fertilized as well.
Vinca is a nice ground cover.
I understand apartment dwellers might not be allowed
gardens, but they usually have small balconies or patios
where they could have potted gardens.

We're allowed a potted garden on our balcony, but it would be wasted effort, as we're facing the woods, and get very little sun.

Lightfoot, you should install a Gro-light.
It works well for salad greens and might
possibly aid in growing tomatoes. You
could place the pots beneath the Gro-light
until the part of day the sun shines a bit.
Worth a try, aye?

Problem is we have to pay for our electricity here.

I don't think Gro-lights raise the electric bill much.
