Caroline

When you were just a child, sweet Caroline
With sun-bleached hair across a brow so fine
Cornflower blue eyes, a look that made me weak
Your touch tied up my tongue, I couldn't speak

At fifteen years, you whispered in my ear
"Do you love me? Am I forever dear?"
At sixteen years, you swore me to be true
And I avowed my heart belonged to you

Your father planned a rich man you would wed
He would not give you to my marriage bed
But we were bound by a stronger band
Against our love, his power would not stand

Meet me at sunset at yonder river's edge
I have a poor man's raft hidden in the hedge"
Your lace, beribboned gowns, leave them behind
Sturdy clothes will better serve you'll find

Across this rapid river we shall flee
We set a course for land in Tennessee
A horse and wagon I have laid at hand
To take us to the Carolina land

Lightfoot, I was inspired to write that poem from hearing how my great grandfather (I Think) kidnapped my great grandmother and brought her to the mountains of North Carolina. As I was told, he was poor and they loved each other. Her parents wished her to marry up!

(I'm not sure how many Greats should be in it. Great or Great Great.)

When I re-read your poem I could relate to it being from South Carolina. My mother's dad always called Carolina as Caroline. He was from Pennsylvania.

I seem to be rather lazy. I was caught up in a couple of murder mysteries on youtube.
"Lord Peter Wimsey"
I did let the dogs out.
Did a load of laundry.

Margie, thank you for the compliment.
I'm planning to post Caroline's response.
"Charlie", which is from a later time in
Their lives.

Alas, I searched through my old poetry and didn't find "Charlie".
I wonder where it might be.

Was this it?
Awakened by the alarm as I cleared my eyes-

tis another work day,

Heaven forbid I lay here putting life's obligations asside -

for there's nobody gonna pay our way.

Sitting up embracing another lonely day-

you truly were the first thought that came to mind,

memories of your past birthdays sent tears down my face-

what a true love, in you, I did find!

I've learned to hide my emotions real well-

only told one person today it was your birthday...

words can't justify what my heart would love to tell-

but the bond we shared will never go away.

I know anything we would have given you on this day-

could not compare to your eternity in Heaven,

but knowing, you are healed and your soul is saved-

tops any gift, we could have given!

You'd be 58 if still alive and with our daughter and I-

but true love is being able to let go if it makes someone feel at peace,

my the happiness, just to stay alive, you did sacrifice...

but I still feel the last words to you, I did say,

"I will love you until my dying day."

Happy Birthday, Charlie!
