Winter's March

This woeful Winter brings out
The darker side of humanity
We who are reclusive, doubt
That Spring shall ever be

Piles of dirty ice and snow
Winds that buffett folks around
If we dare venture forth
Risking falling to the ground

From the dark, depressing yuck
Comes a beam of welcome light
The first of March restores our pluck
We forge ahead to sunlight bright

Pathetic, but I'm out of inspiration, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Before I'd even seen
Your tiny face,
Your hands and feet
Or cradled you
In loving arms,
Whispered, "Ah, my sweet!"

There was a chance
To keep your life,
To give your name,
I selfishly denied
You and I've
Brought myself this pain

How could I dare,
To interrupt
The natural flow,
The purpose of your being
I could not know

I pray love
Can forgive me
The harm I may have done,
That your next life
Will be a longer one

I wrote this many years ago,
when I was still searching for God.
No, I had not aborted a baby.
I had considered doing so.
Thankfully I did not.

Last night I dreamed of home
Of Mother and of Daddy
Of my sisters and my brothers
That I played with thru a lifetime

I remembered many things
That I thought were forgotten
In this new life, they've been buried
Somewhere in the back part of my mind.

Living in a house with carpet
Electric lights and running water
Beds with fitted sheets
That were bought out of a store

Taking dinner from the freezer
Sure is a whole lot different
Than going to the cellar
For a jar of Mother's canned goods
Food don't seem to taste the same no more

I don't go back to those hills
Very often, but I want to
Sometimes I get so homesick
It just makes me feel like crying
Those hills are filled with beauty
They're so comforting and peaceful
They're the best place for living
And to rest in when you die

Beautiful Nell but I can hear the late ISH now......wonder why he always had to make the lines rhyme?  I do like the flow and the meaning of this beautiful poem.  thank you!

Glad, you bring to mind how he would debate poetry, especially with me. I suppose some of mine is more prose. Thank you.
I think I was homesick when I wrote this one. The paper it's written on has yellowed and is slightly frayed.

Joyous I remember how he was but to be honest I have never been able to write what is called prose because of the rhymer teacher.  Again I say this one is good!

Charlie

My dear, old man, I hold your gnarled hand
Made calloused by the clearing of our land
This old, log home, we made with our own sweat
We worked together since our two hearts met

You ask if I look back with much regret
My dear, old man, how can you forget?
Twas I who bade you love me from the start
Twas at fifteen I pledged to you my heart

Had I become the Politician's wife
And lived a very different kind of life
With maids and servants at my beck and call
And means to travel anywhere at all

Had I chosen to become a rich man's bride
I would not have you now at my side
I would have missed the only love I know
You're the one who set my heart aglow

And now you leave me, Charlie, my dear one
Our time together on this earth is done
For awhile, you leave me all alone
But Charlie love, I'll soon be coming home

Caroline

When you were just a child, sweet Caroline
With sun-bleached hair across a brow so fine
Cornflower blue eyes, a look that made me weak
Your touch tied up my tongue, I couldn't speak

At fifteen years, you whispered in my ear
"Do you love me? Am I forever dear?"
At sixteen years, you swore me to be true
And I avowed my heart belonged to you

Your father planned a rich man you would wed
He would not give you to my marriage bed
But we were bound by a stronger band
Against our love, his power would not stand

"Meet me at sunset at yonder river's edge"
"A poor man's raft lies hidden in the hedge"
"Your lace, beribboned gowns, leave them behind"
"Sturdy clothes will better serve you'll find"

"Across this rapid river we shall flee,
And set our course for land in Tennessee"
"A horse and wagon I have laid at hand
To take us to the Carolina land."

Gift of Love        copywrite (Nellie Dailey)

The heavens afar
Revealed a star
Shining bright as day
In a humble manger
Born to danger
The Christ child on a bed of hay
The story of
A gift of love
His light with us to stay
And since His birth
Upon the earth
Christmas is with us always

(I composed this for Christmas cards)
