Ever have a problem with wild creatures (squirrels, rabbits, deer etc) attacking your veggie garden?

I have a huge problem with squirrels eating my green tomatoes.  They are not allowing the tomatoes to turn close enough to pick to continue ripening off the vine.

I am finding green tomatoes lying in the yard with bites out of them.  I was wondering what could be doing this and I caught a squirrel in action the other day.  It had taken a large tomato and climbed the neighbor's fence and was sitting on a post chomping away on the green tomato.

I live in an area where I have not seen deer but we are over populated with squirrels and a few rabbits.  My son even planted a garden at the end of the yard for the critters.  However it was planted later and not producing yet.

Surely out of 48 tomato plants I will get some to eat and can this year.  The critters must not like cucumbers for I pick tons of them every day.

I am going to pick up some Irish Spring soap the next shopping trip.  I have hear it wards off deer.  Will tie some to the tomato cages and try it.

If you are a guest reading this area....why not give SATW a try?  We are a forum for many different topics and information.  There is no obligation to how often you stop by or post.

I don't have any experience with vegetables, but I know the squirrels like bird seed. Maybe you can lure them away with that.

I picked a few green tomatoes today that looked like they were turning.  I figured I would at least try and get a ripe one this way.

Or maybe I can following the advice from here:

I blamed groundhogs for tomato damage until I learned
that squirrels are the guilty thief. Chicken wire fence
doesn't deter them. Hot peppers wouldn't help. They
just bypass and head for tomatoes. There must be a way.

LOL I have a soft heart now that I no longer eat squirrels.
My daddy used to come home just after daybreak with 4 or
5 squirrels which became delicious squirrel with dumplings
for supper or maybe breakfast.
I no longer need to supplement the larder with wild game, and
the squirrels aren't so wild nowadays.

Out of 48 tomato plants you would think I would have tomatoes running out of my ears. Next year my tomato plants will be planted as close to the house as possible.

I miss him greatly 2Anne. I have pm'd a few times with no answer. Perhaps if some others would send him a pm that we miss him it might help.

I do know where he is posting but I am not going to use that forum's pm system to ask him to come back to SATW. That is not the proper thing to do. Hopefully he will return.

To know he is ok is good news....I have not visited that site in a few weeks so will look once again today.
