Times are getting hard to keep survival these days.  Some have said we are headed for a depression.  The great depression was before my time but I sure heard about it growing up.  Most people today were born after the depression and the youngest may not realize what people had to do to survive.  The main thing people did was never to waste anything.  I was reminded of this yesterday when I had about a cup of cooked rice left from lunch.  Since it was cooler and the need of oven use was apparent I took the cup of rice, 1 cup milk, 2 eggs beaten, and 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and nice helping of cinnamon (I never measure cinnamon because I love the taste of it) and baked this in an oven safe dish until golden brown and enjoyed some rice pudding.  The house smelled like cinnamon all afternoon!

The point of this conversation is to get people to understand there may be hard times ahead with all the shortages and price increases.  Do not waste anything and you will survive.  May not be steak you are eating for now hamburger costs what steak cost a few years ago.  Learn to stretch those meals and always eat the left overs within a few days.

Just some food for thought.  Any comments?  Maybe you have a favorite recipe with some of your left overs??

Glad, first, I am SO happy to see you posting.
Yes, you're so right. WE should never waste food.
It's a gift from our Creator and we should eat with gratitude
and share when we have more than enough. I often
find that I cannot eat everything on my plate. I simply
put the excess into a small dish, put it in the refrigerator
for an afternoon snack.
I used to love Rice pudding and made it often when my five
were growing. I never make it now.
Glad, I have a suspicion that you are a really good southern cook.
I sure would enjoy eating a meal you cooked.

Thanks Joyous!  I am a mixture of Pennsylvania Dutch, southern and Missourian style cooking which makes it never boring for sure.

I have a full 5.8 cubic foot freezer and the top freezer on my fridge, filled with meals on wheels dinners, smoked sausage, imitation crab, and a few other things.  Have cupbords filled with canned goods, pasta, cereal and such.  Have about a dozen emergency ration boxes, with stuff like spam, crackers, and juice boxes., and I don't cook that much anyway, as I often have dinners given to me by lady friends, plus I carry a couple of weeks' worth of spare tire around my middle.  Besides, in our upcoming socialistic government, we should be provided for.  Or, if worse comes to worst, we can denounce our citizenship, and come across the border as an immigrant to have the government take care of us.  Here's another option:  Commit a crime to get incarcerated- get free housing, meals, healthcare....

Glad, like myself, I imagine you developed your own style of cooking.
I used to cook for a husband and five children and myself. They claim
I was a good cook. I find I'm not satisfied with my own now.

LFF, you really should try to get rid of the spare tire.
Overweight isn't good for health. I eat a lot, yet I think I
may be underweight. I guess my height to be 5ft 4 Inches.
Used to be 5' 5'', the only time I was overweight was during
menopause. Usually about 115 to 120 lbs. Now I weigh 110 lbs.
I'm a fast walker, active in Summer, less so in Winter. I know
I have lost muscle mass. Not good, but natural as one ages.

Food for sustenance:
Today we chose a very large sweet potato, microwaved it,
cut it in half, buttered. Yummy. Our very first home-grown
sweet potato!
