In order to keep pictures only in the albums we will need this area for discussion the gardens.  Right now we will concentrate on the current year and if needed will have other threads for preceding years  past.

You may be interested in knowing that I am conducting an experiment with some store bought veggies.  I am curious to see if I can regrow them.

Be sure you don't plant the cans too deeply.

I know!  Maybe you should cut holes in the tops of the cans!  I didn't do that.
The pictures you're posting in the 'Garden 22' topic ( https://shoutaroundtheworld.forumotion.com/t8635-garden-22#231538 ) look great!

Thanks LFF!

I have been out twice today to take updates and each time it started to rain.  Garden hasn't grown much anyway but was wanting to take a pic of the beans.  Son said they needed to go into the ground but we have had some frosty temps lately.....oh well they will grow or not time will tell.

I will be getting new pics soon.  Son is working in the garden today getting ready to plant more.  To date he has peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans planted.  I have lettuce, onions, potatoes, radishes none of which are doing the greatest but we are eating some.

The grapes are starting to ripen......I picked a few loose (the majority on the stem were not ripe) brought them up to the picnic table and washed and ate a few.  Not bad.

Garden is winding down.  May put out a few fall items in the next couple of weeks like lettuce, maybe some beans since the summer beans were not good this year.  Lots of blooms but did not make beans.

Thanks LFF.

As mentioned in chat thread cukes are mostly done and son planted more for second time for just eating fresh this fall.  The ones from a couple of weeks ago did not make it so he is trying again.  If these don't survive the heat then it is too late to try again.

Hoping to still get beans......they are still blooming but no beans to speak of.  Just a few here and there not even enough to pick for a meal.  Maybe a bad year for beans.  Okra is just starting so we may get some a bit later.

Next week I will plant lettuce for fall.  Speaking of fall I am certainly looking forward to it.......been a hot dry summer.  No one's garden did good at all this year.

Glad, my beans were good for one picking. Too tough after due to lack of moisture. Ray's daughter is blessed with a good garden. She gave us a bag of cucumbers and we shared. Her peppers are really nice too. She uses the black weed barrier. I wonder if it also retains some moisture?
I set out a second batch of cucumber plants. The groundhog gobbled them down/I have a few more and hold on to faith.

My beans were so pathetic, I pulled them out.
I have planted some in little pots and if they
come up I will put them in the earth, hoping for
another picking before frost. I have a few pole
bean plants growing quite well.
Today I picked enough Kale and a little Chard
to freeze two small bags.

Glad, each bit of food we put aside for the coming months will no doubt be appreciated. I have 8 or 9 runner bean plants almost ready to put in the ground. I pray they make it to the point of picking and freezing/these days takes me back to childhood. Picking and stringing bushels of beans, Mother and my sister standing over a wood-burning stove canning half-gallon jars of beans, how great they tasted on a winter evening.

My Mom did that when we were kids.  She had a pantry in the basement with shelves and shelves of jars of  beans, peas, carrots, corn, asparagus, plums, peaches, cherries, even grapes.  And of course lots of empty 'recycled' canning jars.

LFF, we had a cellar dug out beneath the house.
It also had wooden shelving along one wall with the canned goods there. Burlap (I reckon) sacks were placed on the dirt floor and when the potatoes were plowed up and picked up by us, they were cured and then placed on the cellar floor. I suppose the sweet potatoes were as well. We had a Smokehouse where the hog meat was stored in a box with salt, which kept it all winter. Certain parts were ground in a grinder by hand, rolled into balls, fried, put in half gallon jars, hot grease poured in , the jars flipped over until the grease hardened. Those were also put in the cellar and OH did that sausage make a GOOD breakfast on a winter morning. Back bones and ribs were also cooked and canned. Fat pieces were boiled in a cast iron pot in the yard, the cooked fat pieces were dipped out, saved for Cracklin cornbread. The hot fat was saved in a large can as lard.

The garden is about done unless the gentle rain perks it up.  After all it is September and would like a couple more pickings of okra.  Did not do well at all.

The fall radishes are up and hope to have some lettuce.  Lettuce was planted twice for the fall garden and so far nothing.

Glad, after my lettuce went up to seed,
I scratched up a small patch and sprinkled
the seed around watered it and waited.
Today I watered it again, I see tiny green
leaves peeping up.
I have a late planting of Climbing beans. They look healthy and I have hope.
Also late squash plants and cucumber plants
blossoming.
