Yes it is work and this family says it is how they survive. I do enjoy watching their videos although I only have the back yard garden and not any of the animals. I will say if it weren't for my two sons living with me (one takes care of the mowing and the other mostly takes care of our garden) I would not be able to put a garden out. I am very thankful.
